Former Republican Nassau County exec Ed Mangano, now age 61, has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison and fined $20,000 for a years-long bribery case, the US Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday, April 14.
Mangano was previously found guilty of:
- Conspiracy to commit federal program bribery;
- Federal program bribery;
- Conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud;
- Honest services wire fraud;
- Conspiracy to obstruct justice.
Prosecutors had asked the judge to sentence Mangano to more than 17 years in prison for “selling the power and influence of his office” after his election win in 2010.
According to prosecutors, Mangano accepted bribes from an Oyster Bay restauranteur weeks into his term as county executive in exchange for preferential treatment.
They said he urged the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor to help the restauranteur obtain financing in order to make required capital improvements at a beach and restaurant by authorizing the town to indirectly guarantee four bank loans totaling approximately $20 million
He then used his new official position to ensure that the town backed the loan.
Prosecutors said that Mangano and his wife later attempted to obstruct a federal grand jury investigation, including making false threats to the FBI.
Mangano’s wife, Linda, was expected to be sentenced later on Thursday for her role in the scheme after both were convicted in 2019, though their sentencing has been repeatedly delayed.
Linda Mangano was found guilty of bribery, wire fraud, and conspiracy to obstruct justice for a loan scheme.
"Edward Mangano, as County Executive, gave Nassau residents widespread corruption and dishonesty instead of truth and integrity," US Attorney Breon Peace said. "Linda Mangano took affirmative steps to mislead a federal investigation to keep her husband in power and to maintain their way of life.
“Today’s sentence should send a strong, unambiguous message to any public official willing to place their personal interest above the public’s, and to those inner circle members who corruptly attempt to protect them from prosecution: my Office will employ all resources at its disposal to investigate, prosecute, and convict you in order to restore the public’s faith in our elected officials.”
